Design Resolutions: The Plan

I think we’re all in the same boat this year. We want to try sharing more aspects of our daily lives, thoughts, personal projects, etc. At the same time, this process is not only daunting, it’s also quite time and money consuming, especially for a design blog. Who redecorates every month?

The other day I read an article in the Wall Street Journal in which designers shared their design resolutions for 2013. Since my apartment really still needs a lot of work and I’ve decided to renew the lease for another year (while I search for that perfect place to buy), I’ve decided to come up with design resolutions of my own. I’m hoping to tackle one project a month and document the process, time and budget permitting.

Above is a sneak peek of my living room you may have seen on Instagram recently (excuse the iPhone quality and lack of styling). I’ve managed to make my place cozy, but it’s definitely far from finished! Since this is a rental and my budget is tight, I’ll have to get creative! Here is my list of design resolutions for 2013:

January: Get new pillows and a throw for the sofa (starting with the easy stuff)
February: Find the perfect bedroom dresser
March: Start ginger jar collection
April: Revamp already purchased second hand furniture
May: Purchase a new chair for the office
June: Hang remaining art and gallery wall
July: Update bedding
August: Switch bedroom and office around (this is going to be annoying)
September: Update lampshades and find a perfect pair of lamps for behind the sofa
October: Reupholster grandma’s two seater sofa
November: Update all curtains and shades (it needs it, bad!)
December: Replace coffee table

What are your decor resolutions for 2013?

Wish me luck!

These are great goals..I have so many I don’t know where to start. I would like to finish my office. I needs a few more art pieces, a chair pillow and a rug. Then I suppose I can move to the living and dining areas.

I love that you’ve broken it down monthly into achievable goals – sounds like the way to go! I can’t wait to see your progress.

These are great goals, It is such a good idea to focus on one thing a month. I always set a long list of things I want to do, then get a bit frustrated because it seems like so much! This is a very organized way of approaching your list. Looking forward to seeing the updates to your home. Yels x

Oooh looking to buy! Are you sticking to Canada long term? I am moving into a new apartment next week as well, and am definitely going to be making some design resolutions myself… starting with actually acquiring some furniture hahah. It’s daunting! Can’t wait to see what you come up with for your apartment 🙂

Love that you’re breaking it out by month! This month I’m working on our gallery wall (just need a couple of frames!) and adding a big painting over the sofa. Next month is probably moving some lamps around and getting a new one. March would be kitchen stuff? Not sure yet – I might be too impatient to schedule out too far, but rather set goals at the start of each month 😉

It is a great idea to assign one goal per month like this. It makes it seem so manageable and yet you know you’ll be accomplishing a lot. It’s January 31st today so I hope you got those pillows and throws under control! 🙂

Eeeeek. I was thinking about that just this morning! Let’s say I’ve narrowed down the options and I just need to commit to one! They say designers are always their own worst clients right? 😉 I’ll do an update in February with the result.

What a great idea! This will make it easier for someone like me to actually achieve the goal! It’s feb now so hope you got one thing checked off!

Thanks Joody! I’m happy to report that the pillows have been ordered and I’m placing an order on the throw tomorrow. January, check! I’ll be writing an update shortly 🙂

Cozy indeed… I love Colonial furniture and eclectic mixes. I love the feeling of “old charm” that gets created by this. Thanks for sharing.
