“Nothing goes down better than a glass of rosé – it’s a drink without pretenses”

That’s what Naomi Watt’s brother Ben said in his interview with Lonny Magazine last summer. The Aussie-expat and photographer bought a weekend retreat in Montauk over a decade ago after discovering the surf side town during a J.Crew catalog shoot. Since then, he knocked down the original cottage, built a new one and bought the neighbours out to build a guesthouse and pool house (reminds me of a certain Jay-Z song)…

Ben Watts is known to be the life of the party in Montauk and his house reflects it well: a laid-back, low maintenance house that blends the neutral rustic look with a colorful pop-culture flavor. Just what one would need in that part of the world.

The quiet fishing town at the tip of Long Island, NY has transformed in the last 10 years, and new hip businesses are popping up like mushrooms every year (see my list of favorite Montauk spots). This summer particularly, it seems there are more new hotels in this surf-loving town of 3,000 residents than most places get in a decade.

As I was contemplating booking a trip there yesterday, it occurred to me that I wouldn’t hate owning a small quintessentially beachy hotel in Montauk. After all it’s my go-to destination every summer. Not to mention I’d go completely wild on the decoration front. Ben Watt’s cottage would be a good starting point for inspiration don’t you think? That’s the #pipedream people.
